A GrayCut system

Why we started

Hair systems have been sold the same way for twenty years. A box arrives from somewhere. A salon glues it down. You order 80% density and open the box on 110%, the colour is a tone too bright in daylight, and the next one is never quite the last one. Nobody writes anything down, so nobody is accountable. You get lucky, or you don't.

We wore these for years before we sold one. At some point we stopped hoping and wrote down exactly what we wanted. Then we found who could make it, and refused everything that was not it. That is where GrayCut comes from.

  • Our own design, drawn in Europe.
  • The best components we can source, knotted by the most skilled hands we could find.
  • Colours that are accurate, and hold for the season.
  • The latest tools of the trade: a scan, a printed model, a real bespoke built on data.
  • Every unit checked before it ships. What misses is sent back.
  • A new design, and an upgrade, with every run.

The standard

And then we wrote it down: what a hair system has to be before it carries our name. Europe never had such a page. A box was ordered, a box arrived, and the man in the chair found out what was in it. We set a higher bar, our own design to a European standard, and we raise it with every run. A young house with a startup's habits: measure everything, improve every run, ship nothing we would not wear.

  • Materials, and why. A 0.06 base is thick enough to hold and thin enough not to show.
  • Skin and lace, plainly. Skin is the sturdy base to start on; lace gives the natural hairline.
  • A lighter routine. Tape, not a tonne of glue: cleaner to wear and easier to take off.
  • What we use ourselves. The tape and cleaner we wear, named by brand in the guides.
  • Advice, not instructions. Written for the man who has never worn one, hairdresser's visit included.
  • Notes between wearers. Wearers trade what worked, what failed and which hairdresser understood the cut.
  • A design that moves. Each season's sheet states what changed, and the design moves with what we learn.

The method

We see a hair system as a whole: the material, the design, the way you keep it. For twenty years each man has learned that alone, from forums and trial and error. We would rather bring it to you. So we choose every material for the way it is worn, use what we recommend ourselves, and write down what years of wearing taught us. You take it as advice, and decide.

The scan station

The technology

We are a young house and we would rather measure than guess. Most custom-made is an approximation: cling film and tape, a handful of measurements, a base cut for an average head. On the Bespoke we scan yours, more than 40,000 points in around a minute, and print a model of your head to 0.2 mm. We sit down with you and choose the hair, the colour, the grey, the density. Then the system is knotted by hand on your model, one hair at a time, around 60 hours. The density comes down where a real hairline thins, the edge is broken up by hand, the knots are bleached, the finish is matte. It is checked on the model before it ships. Made to your shape, there is nothing to trim when it arrives. Your hairdresser cuts the hair, that is all.

On the Standard you set the specification yourself: density from 50 to 80, so it looks like your age; six shades; length, grey, wave, front edge, base. Made on your order in the next run, which is why it costs less than the one ready for 24-hour dispatch.

The seasons

We work the way a fashion house does. No warehouse of everything, one run a season, made for the men who ordered it.

Each season has its sheet: the base, the shades, the densities, and what changed since the last one. The run opens on a date, closes on a date, and arrives in time for the season. While yours is being made you hear from us four times: ordered, in the making, checked, shipped.

Four seasons, four runs, four sheets a year. A few systems from the last season stay in stock, out in 24 hours, at the higher price. Most wearers keep a spare, and so would we.

The Bespoke keeps its own clock: 4 to 6 weeks from the scan, and a few days a year, the scanner comes to a city near you.

  • Accountability. We sign for every unit we sell and never hide behind a parcel.
  • Independence. We will never ask you back to a chair or a monthly bill.
  • Honesty. We say it is a skill, and we promise nothing we cannot keep.
  • Precision. We measure instead of guessing, and send back whatever is merely close enough.
  • Privacy. We never show a face or a name, and what you order stays yours.
  • A standard that rises. We revise the standard every season and share it with every wearer.

What we stand for

We do not knot the hair ourselves. We write what gets knotted, approve every sample, check every unit and send back the ones that miss, because we will not sell bad quality. We want to write the new standard for hair systems in Europe, and these six lines are what we hold ourselves to. You can hold us to them.

The freedom

All of it is for this. A product good enough that you need nobody. You put it on at home. When it needs cutting, you go to a regular hairdresser, like any man with hair going for a haircut. No chair you have to return to, no monthly bill, no city you have to live near. The system does the work, so no one else has to.

A Paris street at dusk, the Eiffel Tower beyond

From Paris

GrayCut is a small house in Paris, run by people who wear what they sell. We started in Germany and Italy, where more than 2,000 systems have gone out and 240 men have left a review, 4.8 out of 5. None of them appear here. No faces, no names, by principle. We keep our privacy the way we keep yours.

Paris is by appointment. You are met at the gate.

The next run and the next tour dates come by email. That is all we send.
